The 49ers just fell to 5-2 after a tough loss to the Vikings on MNF. And it was ugly. Purdy was not able to run the offense at all, and the defense was just not able stop Cousins and Addison. Here are my takeaways from this game:
Deebo Samuel is a VERY important part to this offense
My first and biggest takeaway is the fact that Deebo Samuel is a very important part to this offense. I'll admit- I've had my doubts about Deebo and I still do. But, the offense today highlighted the fact that Deebo needs to play for this offense to function correctly. The after the catch threat of Samuel opens up so much for Kittle, CMC, and Aiyuk. As we saw today, without Deebo, Purdy was not able to find any of his threats, even against an inconsistent Vikings defense. If Deebo can't stay healthy, I honestly don't see this team going all the way.
Brock Purdy is NOT an elite QB
My second takeaway is that Brock Purdy is not an elite QB. Before these last few games, people were considering Purdy top 10. Some even said top 5. But, the reality is that he's not at the level yet. To be considered an elite QB, you have to be able to get points up on the board, no matter how the rest of the team is playing. The best of the best always find a way. As we have seen recently, Purdy has not been able to do that. Now, I am not saying he is a bad QB at all. But, he is not a QB you can lean on if things go south with the defense.
The 49ers need an ELITE defensive back
My last takeaway from this game is the fact that the 49ers need an elite DB. Ward and the other DB's were called for so many penalties on crucial plays, and it was pretty frustrating to watch. They were not able to stop any receivers, especially Jordan Addison. If this team wants to get back into title favorites, I think they should make a move for CB Pat Surtain.
